Summer 2016 Anime Summary

So how’s school going for you guys? Well, I hope.

Ranking From Best to Worst

  • Danganronpa 3
  • Planetarian
  • Mob Psycho 100
  • Orange
  • 91 Days
  • ReLIFE
  • Shokugeki no Soma 2
  • Days
  • Tales of Zestiria (Dropped)
  • Masou Gakuen HxH
  • Taboo Tattoo

  • Active Raid 2 (Dropped)
  • Rewrite
  • Battery (Dropped)
  • Hitori no Shita: The Outcast

– Summer anime this year was a marked improvement from last year, but not to any significant degree. I enjoyed both Danganronpa 3 and Planetarian, but both anime’s endings didn’t live up to the rest of their runtime (aka they were very tensionless), so I can’t say either of them are great. A lot of people seem to really love Mob Psycho 100, but as I’ve already gone over in the last review, I found it to be no more than watchable at best. Still, there’s a whole lot worse the fanbase could have fawned over. Like everything below Mob on my rankings, which was either a disappointing bore at best or pure eye cancer at worst.

– I didn’t bother with the slice-of-life shows for obvious reasons, and Thunderbolt Fantasy isn’t on here either because nothing about the premiere interested me to watch more other than the puppet effects that got boring after ten minutes (plus, it’s arguable whether that even counts as anime in the first place). As such, they’re not ranked.

– 2016 is almost over and I have yet to find an anime that I’d go out of my way to rewatch (although I’m currently going through Danganronpa 3 again because ending aside, it’s fun to go back and see what you overlooked the first time). There’ve been several decent things, but I really hope something astounds me the way Rakugo astounded the majority of the elitist crowd, Re:Zero astounded the majority of the casual crowd, and Kimi no Na wa astounded the majority of Japan before the year ends. Koe no Katachi is probably the closest contender to doing so, but I doubt I’ll have a chance to see it this year.

– I haven’t finished Days as of yet given how it’s two-cour. Also haven’t completed Kuromukuro, but that’s a Spring show, so it wouldn’t have ranked on here anyways.

– Fall season technically starts today, but I don’t think anything worth watching comes out this Saturday.

Minor Quips

  • If nothing else, at least most of us can agree that Mob Psycho’s ending being tensionless was part of the joke.
  • Wow, this season’s noitamina show was really bad, huh?
  • I wonder if I can finish Luke Cage before the Fall season gets underway?

  1. I just want to add how bad Battery has become. Man, the only actual baseball happened in the last minute of the show, and it was animated underwhelmingly.

Well, I was happy with the bishie drama going on (I love orange so that goes) until it never really went anywhere. Too bad, I won’t be able to watch Danganronpa 3 (my other friend who loves the show also tells me I have to play the games).

    For others:

Orange is good but episode 8, half of 9 and half of 10 could be removed. That show is bloated.

91 days is meh. Really meh. Better than Joker Game though.

You actually finished Masou Gakuen? Wow. Congratulations!

  2. I was really, really bored with Summer. Like even Spring’s bad shows at least had with them something interesting to talk about, I feel like there’s very little discussion when it comes to a majority of the titles that came out in Summer, barring a few exceptions. It’s a bit better than Summer 2015, though, which was utterly horrifying. Summer in general seems to be a weak season for anime, and it always has been, though 2014’s was a bit stronger than usual.
