Blood Blockade Battlefront’s Story Isn’t Good (And I Doubt It Ever Will Be)

Leo’s face right now is a perfect representation of my frustration with this show whilst Zapp’s is the show glaring right back at me because he has a lot of fans to support him and doesn’t care what I think.

I mean seriously, where is the goddamn story to this thing? We’re more than half-way through the show and nothing has FUCKING HAPPENED! Even Sound Euphonium, an anime about cute girls that I find more boring than this show (if I had to rank the Spring anime right now and excluded shorts, BBB would be in third place under Punchline and Sidonia), has had more serious progression in regards to its plot and characters since its debutAll BBB does is just hint at a larger story at the end of each episode, follow-up on said hint for a minute or two next episode, and the rest is just one-off, junk food episodic storytelling that isn’t going to be the least bit relevant after it ends, doesn’t develop the characters in the least, and I don’t think anybody but Leo and Klaus have done much of anything important to begin with. And that’s not a high bar since all Leo has done is use his eye powers and get kidnapped every episode whilst Klaus has…um…beaten people up. Yeah, they haven’t progressed at all since their introduction either.

Seriously, what am I supposed to find entertaining about this show? Even by the standards of episodic storytelling, BBB is just a failure. The stories have little to no substance for me to chew on. The action isn’t entertaining. The humor falls flat, mostly because it overshoots the “levity in regards to a serious situation” way too much to the point that not only isn’t it funny, but it kills the tension. And most importantly of all, these characters are doing nothing. Absolutely nothing!

I mean does this week’s story of “Klaus going into the ring to bail Zapp out of a scenario” have anything to it other than “it looked cool”? Unless someone can convince me otherwise, I’m going to say no. Give your characters something important to do you goddamn anime!

  1. Sure, but name one anime this season that has a good story? If you wanted to stretch it, you could say Sidonia is riding on the back of a relatively decent story from its first season, and that Arise counts even if it’s just a re-airing of the OVAs. But Arslan is the same high-fantasy rehash we’ve been seeing for ages, and Baby Steps is the same sports anime I’ve seen a dozen times now. Even Yahari has no real story, and is just a glorified after-school special.

These days, it seems you sell an anime on its cool/cute characters, not the story. Nobody wants a engaging story compared to slick visuals, cool-sounding philosophizing, and some meager catharsis so we can feel like we’ve watched something satisfying. BBB is just another of those anime, but it’s at least obviously *trying* to entertain us on some level, rather than just easily coasting by as most popular anime seem to. That doesn’t excuse it, but it does put it notch above all the other storyless anime out there.

    • I just said BBB is my third favorite anime of the season and you’re telling me that it’s a notch above all the other storyless anime out there. And no anime doesn’t “try” to entertain, although it seems to forget what the definition of “entertain” is alot these days. Regardless, that’s not going to change the fact that BBB is boring to me.

That’s been going on long before every anime tried to copy Evangelion.

  2. First, I’m gonna say that there’s a to more anime being made nowadays than there used to be, and most of them are bad. No, it doesn’t wholly relate but I wanted to say it.
And second, I think this was a bit of a cost-cutting episode. The plot was pretty thin this time, so where else to spend the least effort possible? When Klaus got into the arena, the bit where Zapp got beat up offscreen at the end, and more.

I know. I’ve been saying that since I started the blog.

      Oh Bones…
