Twelve Days of Disappointingly Bad Anime #1: Santa Company

I was struggling to decide which anime I wanted to put as the #1 most disappointingly bad anime in this year’s Twelve Days. Was it Terraformars? Well, I didn’t expect it to be that incompetent, but I was never really hyped for it given all the praise bordered on stuff that I had no interest in. Was it Captain Earth? No, because I’ve never cared much for the mecha shows that Bones puts out. Mahouka? No, because I didn’t watch much of it and we all knew it was going to be shit the moment it was announced. Sailor Moon Crystal? Well…yes there’s that too, but this is my Twelve Days post and I’m choosing not to spotlight that thing.

No, I think for the final entry on these Twelve Days posts, I should spotlight something Christmas-y that I had expectations for, only for them to be dashed with more swiftness than Michael Phelps on steroids. As such, on this fine Christmas day, allow me to take a big dump on Santa Company: a Kickstarted anime production that I am glad I did not pay money for back when people actually trusted the system blindly because my god would I have gotten ripped off.

If you didn’t read the plot synopsis of this thing on MAL, you’d have no idea who these characters are or what Santa Company actually is beyond being a magical office that does the actual gift delivering on Christmas Eve rather than Santa Claus himself. But the problems go beyond feeling like we got dumped in the middle of a story that wasn’t fleshed out properly. The actual episodic story we’re given in this 28-minute slog is a simple “we forgot to deliver a gift and thus must hurry in order to get it to some random kid in time before Christmas day”, and as the professional handy man said regarding the sleigh made of reindeer manure, “this shit will not fly”. The art direction is flat, the characters are a bunch of annoying kids with as much personality as the Care Bears, it’s not funny, and it ultimately adds nothing unique to the “Christmas special” genre in general. Just plain forgettable.

I guess the reindeer design was kind of funny, but that’s about all that stands out for me. F*ck this addition to the anime Christmas line-up, and Merry Christmas to everyone else.

  1. “The actual episodic story we’re given in this 28-minute slog is a simple ‘we forgot to deliver a gift and thus must hurry in order to get it to some random kid in time before Christmas day’ ”

Sounds like every other generic Christmas special to me.
